McCain: American Troops In Iraq For "Make it a 100" Years

GOP contender John McCain, who about tied for third among Republicans in Iowa, had something quite startling to say about Iraq while campaigning in New Hampshire today. He interrupted someone recalling that President Bush envisions U.S. forces in Iraq for 50 more years with, “Maybe a hundred [years].” He continued, “That’s fine with me, I hope that would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al-Qaeda is training and equipping and recruiting and motivating people every single day.” Video below. Notice that “Independent Democrat” Sen. Joe Lieberman is standing behind him.

David Corn asked McCain about his assertion afterward and says McCain told him American troops “could be in Iraq for ‘a thousand years’ or ‘a million years,’ as far as he was concerned.” Hey, why not shoot for a googolplex, Senator? You gotta think big.

Calls for prosecution of homeowner Joe Horn

Joe Horn, 61, shot Miguel Antonio DeJesus, 38, and Diego Ortiz, 30, after telling police he saw them steal from a neighbor's home in the 7400 block of Timberline on Nov. 14. Horn told a 911 operator that he intended to confront and shoot the men.

Pasadena police expect to complete the investigation into the shooting and hand it over to the Harris County District Attorney's Office in about 10 days to two weeks, said Vance Mitchell, Pasadena Police Department spokesman.

Prosecutors, Mitchell said, will determine if the case should be taken before a grand jury for a possible indictment.

"I want justice," Stephanie Storey, DeJesus' fiance, said Wednesday. "I want Mr. Horn put behind bars."

Horn's attorney, Tom Lambright, said his client opened fire in self-defense.

"I think he did what he legally had the right to do," Lambright said. "He defended himself."

Lambright said that the two men were in Horn's yard when his client shot them. "He said they lunged, he thought, at him," Lambright said.

Legal experts said Texas law allows people to use deadly force against others who are burglarizing someone's home. However, they also say all the facts have to be examined.

At Wednesday's news conference, organized by Quanell X, Storey said DeJesus was a "good-hearted person." She explained that her fiance's real name is Hernando Riascos-Torres. DeJesus, she said, was a name he used.

Pasadena police said they are uncertain what the man's real name is.

Officials with the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office said they have identified him as Hernando Riascos Torres with a fingerprint on a Colombian identification card.
